Apos Health

Coastal Physiotherapy is pleased to offer Apos® Therapy

For chronic knee, hip and lower back pain
Apos® is a NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) recommended footwear device, you wear for an hour a day.
It is non invasive and personalised to treat the cause of your pain, by retraining your gate (how you walk) allowing you to move and live more comfortably.

It shifts your weight away from painful areas and retrains how you walk, giving you long term relief, even when not wearing the device.

Move better. Live better.

Apos Health Coastal Physio Frinton

Apos® is an innovative, personalised and non-surgical treatment for knee , hip and lower back pain, which has been clinically proven to alleviate pain and improve mobility. Developed by doctors from the fields of orthopaedics and sports medicine, Apos® is based on established scientific principles of biomechanics and neuromuscular control. The therapy utilises an individually adjusted unique biomechanical foot-worn device and is performed as part of a patient’s day to day activities.

The Apos® boots are personalised to treat the cause of your specific pain by retraining your body to help you move better and live better. Here’s how:

Redistribute Redistribute the forces that contribute to the pain in the joints

Re-educate re-educate the brain and muscles to work more efficiently again, creating healthier walking patterns and lasting relief when you are not wearing your Apos®

Apos® was developed by experts in orthopaedics and sports medicine, with the aim of helping people with disabling musculoskeletal disorders – with particular focus on knee osteoarthritis. Apos® has been found to be effective for the following conditions:

  • Knee pain (Osteoarthritis, patellofemoral pain syndrome, meniscal tear, ligament tear)
  • Lower back pain
  • Rehabilitation before and after total knee and hip replacement surgery
  • Hip pain (particularly osteoarthritis)
  •  Ankle problems (rehabilitation post fractures, recurrent ankle sprain)
  • Sports injury rehabilitation

Generally, Apos® treatment is not suitable for individuals who:

WPA, Cigna, Willis Towers Watson, and The Exeter insurance companies have direct settlement arrangements for Apos® treatment. Prior to admission, you must contact your insurer to confirm that your policy covers Apos® and to receive a pre-authorisation code for the treatment.

Please note that since medical insurance is a contract between the member / patient and the insurance company, settlement of the account remains the patient’s responsibility. Our patient care team is available to answer any of your questions or queries.

Joint and muscle pain typically cause the sufferer to compensate by changing their walking patterns.

Strides gets shorter, walking speed decreases, and the person avoids putting weight on the affected side.

As a result, they may limp, but not necessarily in a manner that can be noticed to the untrained eye.

At your initial evaluation, a digitised gait analysis will provide an objective scientific assessment of the way you walk – including load distribution on each leg, stride length, gait symmetry and more. This, along with the rest of the assessment, enables the physiotherapist to customise the AposHealth® programme to your unique needs, and to objectively compare your progress throughout the treatment.

AposHealth® reduces pain and improves function and quality of life. The decision regarding surgery is made by the patient and their orthopaedic consultant and it is part of the AposHealth® credo not to interfere in this decision.

We discuss the expected prognosis of AposHealth® with the patients, and in some case surgical should not be delayed.

Having said that, there is growing evidence that many patients that would have otherwise had surgery have been able to delay and avoid surgery.  A recent study showed that 84% of NHS surgical candidates were able to delay surgery for at least 2 years.  Ongoing data collection supports patients 5+ years of surgical avoidance.

The accumulated clinical global experience at Apos Medical Assets and some published and unpublished data strongly suggests that AposHealth® can (i) reduce the need for surgery significantly; and (ii) improve the outcome of surgery when AposHealth® is used as part of post-operative rehabilitation.

No, it's really science on a shoe.

Each pair of Apos is specifically calibrated to shift pressures away from painful structures.

And because the pods are curved, they provide the body with what’s called “proprioception” and

challenges the muscles to walk in a new way,so that even when patients are not wearing the shoes, over time, Apos trains the brain and the muscles so that they can feel better in their regular shoes.

So, are these magic shoes?

No, but we hear that a lot because they really work in helping address the underlying issues
